| The season at Braintree runs from
the end of April right through until mid-September, during which time our
bowlers participate in a wide range of matches, leagues and
competitions. Once the season gets going there is someone bowling
every single day of the week.
League Matches - Mens, Ladies and mixed Braintree's men and ladies sections compete in the North West Essex League once a week; on a Monday afternoon for the ladies and a Wednesday evening for the men. Both sections put out three teams of three every match and, generally, we have a good winning rate throughout the season. Braintree also competes in the Sudbury League at least once a week on a Tuesday, Thursday or Friday evening. The league is a friendly competition, triples format, and each team has to include one lady and one man for it to be a viable entry. County Matches As Braintree is a fairly strong team we enter, every season, the Memorial Shield and the Widdop Cup, which can be entered by any bowling club in Essex so it is quite a prestigious competition to win. Both competitions involve a game of fours where one team plays at home and the other travels to the oppositions green. The only difference between the two competitions is that badged county players cannot enter into the Widdop Cup, giving non-county players a better chance at winning a county competition. Last season we reached the final of the Widdop Cup, but only just lost to Witham BC. Friendly Matches Throughout the season we play friendly matches of rinks of triples against other clubs in the local area, at home and away. They are normally weekend games with the occasional weekday game in the afternoon. It is an excellent chance for many beginners to get their first taste of competitive bowling but not under any pressure to perform to the best of their ability. Club Competitions Braintree Bowling club organises many different club competitions for all ages and abilities to compete in. They all end up with the finals being played in mid-September as the last big event of the season where nearly all of the members come down to watch and support their friends and family who may be playing. The trophies and cups are presented at the end of the Annual General Meeting after the traditional dinner. |
