Bowling for Beginners at Braintree Bowling Club

At Braintree Bowling Club we run beginners courses every year in May for anyone who wishes to take up the sport.  We consistently get a number of new members every year from these courses.  If you wish to take part in these courses, there are three, then please contact one of the current members mentioned below and read the session by session layout as to what you would be doing:

INTRODUCTION TO BOWLS AT BRAINTREE BOWLS CLUB  

We will run three sessions that will help you to understand how to play the sport of bowls and enable you to decide, we hope, to take up the sport and join our club.  If you would like three, free training sessions then please ring either Malcolm Stark on 01376 347857 or Paul Costin on 01376 340368.

Session 1       Objectives:                       

The aims of this session are; to establish a basic delivery, understand how to take green and how to let the bowl do the work.

 Practical, we will:

  • Cover the basic safety aspects on and off the green 

  • Explain the green, rinks and basic rink boundaries.

  • Explain the mat its purpose and how to place it. 

  • Practice delivering the jack to establish a delivery technique. 

  • Practice centering the jack. 

  • Explain; how to select the right size of bowl, how to hold the bowl, the bias of the bowl. 

  • Explain line and length, point of aim, point of turn 

  • Plenty of practice with the bowls

Session 2       Objectives:  

Recap and build on Session one, explain the elements of playing a game, scoring, measuring and types of shot

 Practical, we will:

  • Check grip and delivery technique. 

  • Bowl forehand and backhand to jacks of various length. 

  • Illustrate different types of shot e.g. draw, resting, trail, toucher, blocker, fire/drive.

  • Explain how shots are scored, practice how bowls are measured. 

  • Plenty of practice with the bowls.

Session 3       Objectives:  

We will explain etiquette, some of the basic laws of the sport of bowls, playing positions and responsibilities

 Practical, we will:

  • Discuss the importance and value of etiquette. 

  • The types of games played, playing positions in a game and using a scorecard. 

  • Play a competitive game rotating positions and keeping score of shots. 

  • Finally we will explain, how the club is run, roll-up nights, the leagues we play in and club competitions.
