Braintree Bowling Club has been running since 1919 and has thrived ever since with a string of county, national and even international champions.  Even now we have county champions but we also have a lot of other up and coming bowlers.  These newer bowlers take part in the club competitions that are run every season.  Most of the competitions have been running since the creation of the club and some later on as you will be able to see once you click on the links below:

The Creation of Braintree Bowling Club

From the minutes of a meeting on the 30th April 1919 that we have now found, we know exactly how our club began.  Below is an exact copy of the minutes created from this meeting:

30th April 1919

A meeting of Bowlers was held on this date at Messrs. Holmes & Hills Office Bocking for the purpose of forming a Bowling Club.

Mr Fulcher was elected to the chair.

After considerable discussion it was unanimously resolved that a Bowling Club be formed to be called The Braintree and Bocking Bowling Club.

 

The subscription was settled at 10/6d a season to be paid on application for membership.

 

A Committee consisting of Messers. H.C.Brown, V.R.Bromage, E.Bloomfield, E.Smith, T.Harrington and Fulcher was appointed for the purpose of doing what was necessary to get the Club going and make some arrangements with the Gardens Trustees as to the Green.

 

Mr A.Hall was asked to act as Honorary Secretary and Treasurer and it was resolved that a further Meeting be held in due course for the formal election of Officers etc.

 

A vote of thanks was accorded to Mr.Alfred Hills for the use of the room for the meeting.

From which meeting the following will be of interest:-

 

"The Hon. Sec reported the very generous offer of Mr. George Hunnable in presenting the Club a site for a Bowling Green on his New Town Estate Braintree and it was unanimously resolved to accept the offer and the matter was left in the hands of the Committee to deal with and report to the next general meeting in due course."

Four Months later the subscriptions were raised to £1;1:0. which related to average weekly earnings and is the equivalent today of approx £45.
